Debra Sears was 22 years old the first time she developed a suspicious lump in her breast. It would be the first of what would become nearly annual biopsies and surgeries to remove suspicious breast tissue due to benign breast tumors. After nearly 30 years, the multiple procedures had taken a toll on Debra, siphoning time and energy from her life. While Debra considers herself lucky that the tests never revealed a more serious condition, she found herself on an emotional roller coaster each time she waited for the results of her biopsies. Given her ongoing battle with multiple lumps in both her breasts, Debra was resigned to continue her agonizing routine until one of the tests proved her worst fear - breast cancer.
While discussing her medical background with a new physician, he suggested she consider undergoing a prophylactic double mastectomy. At first, Debra thought the procedure was too drastic an option for her and she did not want to lose her breasts. However, as more lumps continued to emerge, her family, especially her husband, urged her to reconsider.
Debra visited her surgeon to discuss her options, and learn about breast reconstruction. Following her consultation, Debra made the difficult decision to undergo a prophylactic double mastectomy followed by breast restoration with Natrelle® silicone breast implants.
Debra has been extremely pleased with the results of her surgery, both emotionally and physically. She loves the look and feel of her breasts, often joking that they look better than ever before. Additionally, the surgery has provided an emotional relief for Debra, who no longer has to anxiously await the results of her tests. Instead, she is enjoying her restored confidence in her body.
"For years, I thought my only option was to have more biopsies and wait for the results to come back as full-blown cancer. It is important that other women like me know that they have options. I only wish I had known about this option sooner!"
